LEPTAILURUS SERVAL
Servals, a.k.a. "poor mans cheetah" are beautiful spotted cats, full of energy and playfulness that will fill out to 20 to 40 pounds as adults. They have long legs, made for jumping, long ears, made for hearing, and a lean body followed by a slender tail. They are inquisitive and intelligent, and have been documented living over 20 years in captivity. Click here to view a picture.
"Pet servals" require a commitment of time and love. Even though each cat is individualistic, most servals demand regular attention if you want them to remain "domesticated". You can’t leave them in a kennel for long periods, and expect them to welcome you back with open arms.
Bottle babies can easily be trained in acceptable behaviors including halter training and socialization skills.
They normally use a litter box like other cats, and exhibit domestic cat behavior. Keep in mind they can clear a fence in the blink of an eye, and cannot be turned loose even in a fenced yard. They must be leashed or kenneled outside. Click here to view another picture.
They normally breed at 18 months to 2 years, and produce 2 to 4 kittens. I have seen litters of 5 or more on occasion. Gestation is about 75 days. They are not seasonal in breeding, having kittens most any time of year.
We pull kittens at 3-5 days (making use of mom’s colostrum), and put them on formula until we begin weaning at 5 weeks or so. Usually, having them ready to ship at about 8 weeks.
We recommend spaying or neutering, to keep you baby content in the house. We ship our kittens already declawed. Surgery is much easier on young ones (like people).
High quality cat food is acceptable, we wean ours on Zupreem.
We have raised kittens with dogs - with no outstanding problems, although we do not recommend trusting them with birds.
